Mondale High School
Mondale High School, on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, enjoys a reputation as a school that pursues excellence in sports and academic studies. The school used its initiative to establish a computer laboratory with 15 computers for teaching Computer Literacy. The course, which credited learners with a certificate, was so successful that the school contemplated introducing the International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) examination.
The launch of the Khanya computer laboratory at Mondale in 2001 introduced a new dimension to the school's approach to the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in education. The Khanya Project provides support and resources for effective curriculum delivery in Mathematics using ICT. Educators received training in selected educational software programs and the integration of that software into lesson plans. Here learners use the computer laboratory to its full potential. In addition to Mathematics, the school uses the computer laboratory for curriculum delivery in History and English. Even after regular lessons learners use the Ccmputer laboratory for revision. The school values the computer laboratory as an asset not only in academic terms, but also in terms of the empowerment it affords learners. Learners boast improved computer literacy skills, a high academic pass rate and the school now offers Computyping as a subject.
Mondale High School succeeds in programmes like the Khanya Project because they work as a team and seek out opportunities and challenges that will enhance their service to the school community, particularly the learners. When the Khanya Project, in conjunction with the Specialist Schools Trust (SST), presented them with the opportunity to forge a partnership with a school in the United Kingdom, they grabbed it. The young, dedicated team of educators pursue the partnership with goals that will enhance the holistic development of all learners. Among their partnership goals are projects between learners to research living and social conditions in their own area and country and, using ICT, to exchange their research findings with learners at their partner school. Their three-year plan includes projects in Geography, Science and educator development and setting up databases for research and analysis. It is this type of work ethos that typifies many of the schools that embrace the Khanya Project initiative. Their team spirit allows them to embrace and exploit the opportunities that Khanya Project's programme for curriculum delivery through ICT presents.
