KHANYA SCHOOLS

Simunye Secondary

Simunye High School serves a multicultural community in Delft South. The school, established in 1998, is fairly young but has experienced a rapid growth as the community of Delft has expanded. The young forward thinking staff realised that computer skills were an essential if their learners were to be equipped for the job market and they were therefore very excited to become part of the Khanya project in 2004.

The preparation of the room to be used for the computer laboratory was tackled as a school community project and the installation of the software followed shortly. Simunye High believes that the skills that are acquired in the laboratory will ensure the job readiness of their learners, it empowers them and it uplifts the community.

Educators at Simunye High have welcomed the addition of technology to the school. They have been enjoyed their training and are now competent users of the Microsoft Suite of software and they find that it makes administration far easier and far less of a burden. Preparation of lessons is also enhanced as educators have access to far more resources.

Exposure to technology in what was essentially a computer laboratory aimed at mathematics, soon led to a great demand for training in computer skills. In response to this the school registered to teach CAT as a subject and the Khanya laboratory has since taken on this mantle. The technology has been adapted to run as a CAT laboratory and Khanya is in the process of installing a proper CAT laboratory at the school. While these developments are positive, they have been at the cost of other learning areas as the current laboratory has been restricted in use to those learners doing CAT as a subject. Once the new CAT laboratory is functional, the original Khanya laboratory will once more be available to other learning areas and to all learners.

Technology has enabled Simunye High to enter into an information sharing project with a neighbouring school facilitated by Dimension Data. Through this, learners have become part of a dynamic living classroom and they have seen the power of technology to transform lives.
