KHANYA SCHOOLS

Delft Primary

Known as the “mother of all schools” in the Delft area, Delft Primary was the first school to be built in the area in 1990. It faces all the challenges associated with a township school in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town.

Although financially challenged, the school is blessed with a pro-active principal and dedicated staff that always rises to the occasion with creative and innovative fundraising efforts to meet the shortfall in the school budget caused by non-payment of school fees. Delft Primary believes in forming partnerships with NGO’s and the corporate world and the Safeline/Childline Satellite office for abused children at the school as well as the indigenous gardens established in partnership with Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, bear testimony to that.

With no current access to technology and insufficient funds to think of introducing it at this school, Delft Primary was delighted to be included in the Khanya Project in 2006. As most educators had never encountered technology before, they were initially apprehensive about developing the skills that would allow them to use the technology effectively. Always keen on skills development, the educators at Delft Primary attended training with their Khanya facilitator in the MS Office suite as well as in educational software such as Cami, LTMS and Literacy Bank.

While training has gone a long way towards giving the educators the skills they need to integrate technology into curriculum delivery, their confidence in their ability to do so is still in its infant stages and they still have to be encouraged to expose their learners to the wonderful world of learning with technology as an aid. Educators are, however, able to complete all administrative work in the laboratory and with continued encouragement and their growing confidence, they will soon be taking learners to the laboratory for integrated lessons on a more regular basis.

The Khanya facility at Delft Primary is being used as part of the Microsoft Partners in Learning Project and Delft Primary hopes to use their facility to present a basic ICDL course at the school.
