KHANYA SCHOOLS

Masonwabe Primary

Masonwabe Primary serves a multi-cultural poverty-stricken community where unemployment is rife. This, together with the high level of crime, only serves to inspire the staff at this school to ensure better opportunities for their learners. Although it was only built to house 1200 learners, the school has grown rapidly since its opening in 2001 and currently has over 1500 learners enrolled. Space is therefore a premium and it is only through the refurbishing of structures which were already in use before the school was built, coupled with extensive measures to ensure security at the school, that Masonwabe Primary has managed to accommodate a computer laboratory.

In 2005 Khanya, in conjunction with Edunova, became involved at the school and a laboratory was established with 24 refurbished workstations and a server. A Linux Open Source system was installed and Edunova provides ICT training and facilitation, Computers for Kids Software and general programming management. Khanya plays a complementary role with the Khanya facilitator also providing assistance.

The technology will help the school to empower their educators and learners through new and relevant technology. The Educators link their curriculum with the technology ensuring that their lessons are more interesting for themselves and their learners. They aim to improve the overall standard of education at the school and to ensure that their learners are not left behind the rest of the world with regards technology.

Educators eagerly attend training sessions and some have been motivated to study further on their own to enhance their skills. They believe that the laboratory will lead to a refinement in administrative work and an improvement in the curriculum delivery at the school. Learners are just as excited when they use the new equipment.

Masonwabe Primary is always aware of their community and the funds that will be required to sustain their new equipment. They have therefore determined that the equipment will be used to uplift the community by offering ITC training and they also hope to establish a website that will expose them to a wider world which may lead to much needed funding.
