Imvumelwano Primary
Imvumelwano Primary serves the Xhosa community of Wallacedene in Kraaifontein. Initially established to accommodate approximately 850 learners, the area and school community has grown to such an extent that the learner population now exceeds its capacity. With almost 90% of the community unemployed, poverty and the accompanying high level of crime in the area present this community with hardships on a daily basis.
Education is the key to fighting poverty and creating better opportunities and educators at Imvumelwano Primary are committed to providing quality education for their learners, ensuring that they have the opportunity to better themselves. With the support and guidance of the Khanya Project, a computer laboratory has been established at Imvumelwano Primary so that learners and educators can be exposed to the world beyond the confines of their community and educators are now able to deliver the curriculum more effectively.
Educators are ecstatic about the opportunity they now have in the laboratory to explore the world using the Internet and they enjoy communicating with other educators via e-mail. Educators feel that they have been empowered by the technology both personally and professionally – they have developed new skills that ensure that they are able to compete in an economy driven by technology and they have become better teachers. Their workload has been eased as most tasks are now completed electronically and they are able to prepare interesting, relevant lessons for their learners. Training with their Khanya facilitator is ongoing – they have received basic computer literacy training and they are trained in curriculum software that ensures that technology integrated curriculum delivery is a reality at Imvumelwano Primary.
Learners at Imvumelwano Primary enjoy every lesson in the interactive and stimulating environment of their Khanya laboratory. They are keen to take their place as e-students in an electronic world and quickly develop the skills required to navigate through the software and to derive maximum benefit from the technology. Learners grasp concepts more readily when they are taught and reinforced in the laboratory where they are visually stimulated and they are able to progress at their own pace, moving through activities of increasing difficulty as they master skills and concepts.
Technology is making an impact on the quality of the educational experience at Imvumelwano Primary. As a result, educators are confident that literacy levels will be raised and numerical skills will improve. The skills developed by both educators and learners in the Khanya laboratory ensures not only that this community is part of a society driven by technology but that they have the skills to succeed in it.
