Hector Peterson Secondary

Hector Peterson High School derives its name from one of the first learners who died in the student uprising against the apartheid government for implementing unfair educational policies. Situated in the informal settlement of Wallacedene in Kraaifontein, this school serves not only the community of Wallacedene, but those of Bloekombos and the greater Kraaifontein area as well.

A priority for this fast developing school has been the improvement of their Grade Twelve pass rate in the final examinations. Educators believed that technology was needed to expose the learners to new ways of learning and thinking, in particular, they wanted to assist the learners to improve their mathematics results. The Khanya Project first became involved at Hector Peterson in 2003 with the aim of assisting them by providing the best computer education programs available as well as the training to implement the use of the software. All of this is being done in their new Khanya computer laboratory.

The laboratory was such a huge success with both learners and educators that a second laboratory has since been established at the school. This is now being used for Computer Applications Technology (CAT) and eventually the use of this laboratory will also be extended to other learning areas. With the demands placed on their existing facility increasing, Khanya’s provision of a brand new CAT laboratory will alleviate this pressure and allow other learners more access to technology.

Hector Peterson High sees their new laboratory as a much needed practical solution to their curriculum needs. In both laboratories, the school community showed their commitment to the learners and the project by assisting with the infrastructure that was necessary in the rooms like the burglar proofing, the table tops and the electricity feeds.

Learners at Hector Peterson High have become more confident in the use of technology despite their previous lack of exposure to it. Today, learners walk into the laboratory as if it has always been there. They use the mathematics educational software and MS Word as well as the Internet and more and more educators are using the laboratory for the preparation of lessons and the accessing of resources.

The staff at Hector Peterson has committed themselves to making the most of the technology at their disposal. They have enthusiastically attended training sessions on matters ranging from computer literacy to learning area specific programs and the Khanya laboratories at this school are a constant hive of activity with educators and learners sitting side by side working away at assignments and worksheets.

With plans to involve the community in the centre they hope to generate funds to sustain the resources and Hector Peterson High, thanks to their partnership with Khanya, hope to become the technology hub of Wallacedene.
