A Project of the Western Cape Education Department
KHANYA SCHOOLS

Voorbrug Secondary

The partnership between Voorbrug Secondary and the Khanya Project has resulted in a great deal of excitement among educators and learners. Benefits already accruing to them include skills development, research skills and resources, assistance with administrative tasks and basic computer literacy skills.

The majority of the educators have completed some basic training through Future Kids – here they covered basic skills, worked processing, spreadsheets, the Internet and PowerPoint. Training sessions were thoroughly enjoyed and managed with aplomb by educators who had initially been fairly intimidated at a task they envisaged being quite daunting. Training has empowered educators to manage their administrative work without assistance and it has given them the confidence to take learners into the laboratory and engage in interactive and stimulating lessons.

The excitement experienced by educators has spread like wildfire to their learners. With the educational software like Mindset, MasterMaths and I-read, learners are being supported academically by the technology. Learning areas like Tourism, History, Geography and Life Sciences use the laboratory extensively for curriculum delivery while other learners use it whenever it is available for research purposes. The presence of technology at the school has increased interest in the subject and the number of learners wanting to do CAT increased to such an extent that Khanya established a second laboratory, earmarked for CAT, at Voorbrug Secondary.

A community school, Voorbrug Secondary would like to share their good fortune and their resources with their community through the establishment of a computer training project with certification and accreditation that they would run in conjunction with a tertiary institution.
