Masibambane Secondary

Masibambane High School was borne out of a need to establish a high school in the Kraaifontein area as many of the learners who completed primary school had to travel long distances to the nearest secondary school. At first they combined with Bloekombos Primary School in a platoon system but they now occupy an old Cape Provincial Administration building that was renovated to accommodate them.

Joining the Khanya project has given them the desire to expand their horizons and they are excited about their new mathematics software as well as other supporting programs. Much of this was made possible by generous funding from the private sector that the school managed to secure. Although the school offers the normal range of subjects, it is already looking forward to broadening their curriculum to include computer studies, engineering subjects as well as woodwork. The school knows the value of science and technology and hopes to source new software for use in their teaching. They believe in giving their learners the best possible education under the present circumstances.

In May 2004 Masibambane became the 100th school to join Khanya's Mathematics programme. Representatives of the WCED, Khanya, Centre for e-Innovation: Education, and Khanya attended the celebrations. Joined by MEC Education, Cameron Dugmore, the school choir enthralled guests. The WCED promised its support to ensure the technological and educational progress of Masibambane. As a result the school has had the Mindset equipment installed which will deliver lessons using satellite and video technology. A second computer laboratory adjoining the first one was installed to serve large classes of about 60 learners. This has heavily impacted on the educator’s teaching methodology since ICT can deliver effective and interesting learning experiences. Recently the educators completed a round of intensive computer literacy training which will assist them in becoming even more confident computer users.
