Paarl Boys Primary
Paarl Boys’ Primary evolved out of the need to offer Junior Primary classes to youngsters in the area who later went on to Paarl Boys’ High. These boys began their schooling at Girls’ High or La Rochelle and then joined Boys’ High for Senior Primary. Opened in 1955, Paarl Boys’ Primary caters for learners from a broad spectrum of cultural and religious backgrounds, all coming together to form the Klein Boishaai family.
A school totally committed to technology integrated curriculum delivery, Paarl Boys’ Primary is the most advanced IT-Integrated school in Paarl and was awarded the second Most Improved IT-School in South Africa in 2001. They have two well-equipped computer laboratories and a computer in every classroom – 24/7 internet connectivity is available in all these venues. Paarl Boys’ Primary also has two Interactive Electronic Whiteboards, televisions in some Senior Phase classrooms for the projection of computer work and the entire school building is a Wireless Access Area.
Khanya became involved at Paarl Boys’ Primary towards the end of 2007 with a view to providing the project with valuable feedback that will assist Khanya in determining which of the technologies used at the school are most effective for curriculum delivery. To this end, Khanya has assisted the school in establishing different technologies in four classrooms – one room has been fitted with a Smartboard, one with Mimio, one with a Mecer EIW board and one with a data projector.
All educators at Paarl Boys’ Primary are computer literate and competent users of technology and they believe that the classroom educator is best able to integrate the curriculum with information technology. To this end they make use of the Microsoft suite, the Internet, email skills, Encarta and other databases, Cami and a variety of other programs. The class educator is also proficient in the use of Interactive Electronic Whiteboards where learning is done through direct interaction with a through technology. These have proved especially useful and effective in the teaching of mathematics and geography.
All learners at Paarl Boys’ Primary are exposed to technology regularly according to a predetermined timetable. Each class visits one of the laboratories for a weekly 60 minute research period, a weekly 30 minute mathematics period where CAMI is used and a 60 minute computer skills period.
In a partnership such as the one between Khanya and Paarl Boys’ Primary each partner is set to benefit from the experience of the other partner and the unique needs of the individual school is met by the dynamic team at Khanya who once again prove that one size does NOT fit all.
