Paarl Girls High

As with many high schools who are facing the introduction of the Further Education and Training (F.E.T) band in 2006, Paarl Girls High, a combined high school and primary school, situated in the picturesque town of Paarl, suddenly found that its existing computer facilities would be under severe pressure as a result of the technology stipulations for particular subjects in FET. The Khanya Project therefore came on board to assist with the establishment of a second computer laboratory which now addresses these needs.

Until recently, the high school and the primary school shared the one laboratory. The grade 1 - 7 learners use it for CAMI while the Grade 8's and 9's use it for EMS (accounting and typing) and grades 10 - 12 do computyping in the venue. The second laboratory is now used for Computer Application Technology (CAT) and Information Technology (IT), two new grade 10 subjects. It is also used to support other subjects like science, accounting and mathematics for curriculum delivery.

The learners really enjoy their time in the laboratory where they also have an ADSL internet connection. The demand for the use of the computers is such that it is open during breaks and after school. The learners have learnt how to use Powerpoint and they used it in presentations to primary schools to promote their school. Learners are also responsible for the updating of the school's website which is proving to be an area of keen involvement for them.

The staff is also enthusiastic about the technology although some were initially a little anxious about how it was to be integrated into their learning area. They have rapidly come to realise that technology can really make their work more interesting and easier - to the extent that they have created their own certificates for prizegiving and all of the reports are also generated electronically.

Paarl Girls' High is on the information superhighway and they intend staying there by doing all they can to ensure that their learners have access to the technology and acquire the necessary skills to build bright futures for themselves.
