New Orleans Secondary
New Orleans Secondary School in Paarl is privileged to have two computer laboratories – a Khanya laboratory and a CAT laboratory. The focus in the Khanya laboratory is on the use of technology for curriculum delivery, especially in mathematics while the second laboratory is used exclusively for Computer Aided Technology.
Educators have responded positively to their training with the Khanya facilitator. They have found that technology has eased their work significantly, especially with regards the preparation of lessons and the management of administrative work. Educators are able to source new, varied and up-to-date information on which to structure lessons; their lessons are more interesting and more relevant for the learners. They are able to maintain their own records and draw up worksheets and exam papers.
Learners at New Orleans Secondary thoroughly enjoy time spent interacting with technology. They are able to complete research and present assignments of a high standard and quality. Fewer discipline problems are experienced in this environment where learners are 100% committed to their work.
A computer club has been established at the school and operates out of the Khanya laboratory and the school newspaper is also produced and printed here.
New Orleans has also taken advantage of the opportunity to form a partnership with Ferryhill Comprehensive School in Durham, UK. This partnership, facilitated by the Khanya Project and the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT), promises to create further opportunities for the school community at New Orleans. Although the Khanya Project was originally introduced to New Orleans to deliver the curriculum in Mathematics using ICT, the school now has the opportunity to transcend the original brief and more fully exploit the potential that education through Information and Communications Technology offers. Evidence of this can be seen from the fact that the school has acquired an interactive whiteboard and the educators have undergone training on this new equipment.
