Groendal Secondary

Groendal Secondary - a farm school established in 1991 - serves learners from the informal settlements in the Franschoek winelands and the surrounding farms. Initially, the school had a Shuttleworth computer laboratory with twenty one computers provided by the Shuttleworth Foundation.

The focus in a Shuttleworth laboratory is on computer literacy for learners and also on the provision of International Computer Driver Licence (ICDL) courses for the community. When the Khanya Project became involved with the school it was in an attempt to use the laboratory to address particular curriculum delivery needs, especially Mathematics in grades 8 to 12. The Khanya facilitator involved with the school has also focused on ICT training for the educators to empower them to use the facility for their lesson development, delivery and their administrative needs.

The school uses the laboratory effectively and the learners are focused on meaningful learning in a stimulating and interesting environment. The educators too are benefiting from their training sessions in a very practical way and are very thankful to Khanya for their support.
