Hottentots Holland High

Hottentots Holland High School is the computer centre for the entire Helderberg area. It serves all the schools that wish to give their learners the opportunity to study computer studies HG or the new subject of information technology. The learners who visit the centre have varying degrees of ability with computers, some having not had any exposure to technology at all.

Khanya first became involved with the school in 2005. The three computer laboratories - all self-funded - had been the home of very old computers and the school had been finding it difficult to run many of the new programs. Hottentots Holland High had therefore intended to upgrade the computer centres systematically. This process was given a mighty injection by Khanya who provided 10 new computers, a more powerful presentation computer and a new server. These additions were put into the laboratory which was earmarked for a full upgrade.

As a result of this upgrade, learners can now work more effectively on some of the newer technology. They can also run Google Earth and similar programs to enhance the learning experience for the learners. This boost was well received by the staff and learners

The computer laboratories are thoroughly utilized, to the extent that workshops offered to learners to teach them how computers work and the basics of running them can only be offered at weekends. The staff is also encouraged to use the laboratories for their administrative tasks. They use Excel for streamlining their mark books and calculations, Outlook for e-mailing and Word for the drawing up of question papers.

Hottentots Holland High are fully aware of the importance of technology for the future of the learners who pass through their halls as well as for the members of their greater community. They are grateful to the Khanya project for the impact it has already had on the school and they hope that the relationship will continue to enable the learners to do even better.
