A Project of the Western Cape Education Department
KHANYA SCHOOLS

Botrivier Primary

Situated in a rural area where work depends on the harvesting seasons, the Khanya Project has brought new life to Botrivier Primary School. The fear the educators had about exclusion from Information and Communications Technology disappeared.

Once the Khanya Project identified the school as a prospective partner, four members of the community and three educators set about converting classrooms into an infrastructure to support the computer laboratory. Botrivier Primary was pleased to give meaning to the expression, 'Seeing is believing', as curious parents who initially viewed the schools fundraising functions with some disbelief, were finally face to face with a computer laboratory for their own children.

The educators believe that the use of Information and Communications Technology is an essential part of learning. They incorporate the curriculum as well as ICT very easily. Educators responded enthusiastically to trainin in the software products Khanya provided and in the Microsoft Suite.

The sustainability of the Khanya Project programme, including the hardware and software, depends on sound business and administration skills. The school community embraces this challenge with the conviction that they now have access to resources that enhance the empowering force of education.
