Herold Primary

Herold Primary lies at the foot of the Montagu Pass in the rural area of Bo-Langkloof. A small farm school, Herold Primary serves the children of workers employed on surrounding farms.

Technology has come to play a vital role in all walks of life – and the world of agriculture has not been untouched by technology. If learners are to gain meaningful employment they need to develop the skills that will make them desirable employees.

As partners with the Khanya Project, technology has now been introduced at Herold Primary in the form of EIWB’s, data projectors and laptops. Learners now have the opportunity to interact meaningfully with the technology. They are learning how to navigate using their fingers and the touch screen technology; often proving to be ‘smarter’ than their educators as they perform functions without fear of failure. Learning from textbooks is VERY outdated at this school.

Initially educators did have fears about mastering the technology. They have been pleasantly surprised at how technology has revolutionised their classroom – from planning to work satisfaction. The role of the Khanya facilitator in turning around attitudes towards technology can not be underestimated – educators have been thoroughly trained in the use of the EIWB’s as well as in the Khanya LTSM software and they have been guided throughout in their lesson development, planning and curriculum delivery.

A new world has been opened to learners at Herold Primary. Not only do the learners from severely disadvantaged communities benefit, others who enjoy more privileges also benefit as their knowledge is increased daily. Visitors to Herold Primary are often surprised at the high standard of technology use and integration that occurs at such a tiny school.
