Thembaletu Primary

A fairly young school, Thembalethu Primary has served the community of Thembalethu and George since late 2000. The principal and staff at the school realised that there was a need for technology to enhance the teaching of mathematics and literacy in particular and they were therefore thrilled when the Centre for e-Innovation initiated a project late in 2005 to establish a computer laboratory at the school.

Educators, learners and parents were very excited about the project and worked together to install the infrastructure in the venue identified for the new laboratory. With funds raised from a number of private companies, they quickly installed new worktops in the laboratory and the Centre for e-Innovation installed twenty computers, a server, a printer, a scanner and airconditioning. This up-to-date facility is also linked to the five computers that were installed in the staff room for the educators. In addition, Khanya has provided the educational software to support curriculum delivery and a facilitator who immediately became involved in educator training.

Educators are undergoing intensive instructor-led training workshops in both the software that they now have access to and basic computer literacy skills. They keenly attend these and then apply their skills in their lesson preparation, delivery and in their administrative tasks. Learners at Thembalethu Primary eagerly attend lessons in their new computer laboratory, taking to the technology as if born to it. They master skills quickly and this success gives rise to increased confidence and sense of self-worth.

As with many Khanya schools, Thembalethu Primary intends to share their new skills and their new facility with their community, thus transferring the skills to the community. In this way they believe that their laboratory will be at the heart of the upliftment of the community as a whole as they develop new skills necessary for better employment opportunities.
