KHANYA SCHOOLS

Pacaltsdorp Primary

Pacaltsdorp Primary first engaged in the new world of technology in 2003 when funds were raised for the establishment of a computer laboratory with 15 computers. With quite a large learner body, only a few learners were able to benefit from this fairly restricted access to technology until the school became part of the Khanya Project in 2006. Now they have a modern laboratory with sufficient computers for even the biggest class to be taken there regularly, the latest hardware and appropriate software to ensure effective curriculum delivery through this medium.

The focus in this laboratory is on curriculum delivery, particularly in literacy and numeracy. Software geared towards these areas has been installed and the learners are enjoying working on the computers.

Educators at Pacaltsdorp Primary have successfully completed the IT course offered by their Khanya facilitator and were very proud when they were issued their certificates. Those who may initially have been intimidated by the technology already feel much more comfortable when engaging with it and they are using their rapidly developing skills to assist them with their daily administrative tasks.

The school governing body and the educators at Pacaltsdorp Primary continue to adhere to their motto “steeds werksaam” – they are committed to changing the lives of their learners and the lives of the broader community by empowering them and engaging them with the ICT world. To this end, the community has been involved from the outset and computer literacy classes are run in the laboratory for them.
