George Secondary
George High School was founded in 1947 and over the past 60 odd years has successfully delivered quality education to an indigent and previously disadvantaged community. Learners have achieved in academics, sport , culture, politics and economics over the years and prominent leaders and pioneers once walked these corridors as learners, living up to their motto 'Surge at Insta'. George Secondary’s vision is to prepare the learners holistically so that they can assume their rightful place in the world.
Initially the school had established a computer laboratory of their own, but they experienced many shortcomings with this 'new age technology' in their attempts to achieve and live up to their vision. With the introduction of the Khanya project to the school, they soon realized what this new technology was all about and how it could be implemented to enhance the culture of learning by delivering curriculum through technology. Once the educators and learners engaged in the Mathematics and Language software programs, one could sense their excitement. The educators are all of the opinion that they, as well as the learners, can only benefit from using the software.
The presence and implementation of the Khanya project at the school was very much the motivational factor and driving force behind the purchasing of a data projector as well as the establishment of another computer room, furnished with 18 brand new computers. Developments were taken one step further when the school was selected by the WCED as one of 7 schools in the province that would cater for learning areas other than the academic ones and the school was identified to become an Arts and Culture Focus School. As part of this project the school received several Electronic Interactive Whiteboards, as well as Apple laptops with the latest educational software. Educators underwent the necessary training and did well in mastering the software quite easily, merely because of the initial IT-training given as part of the Khanya project;
Learning areas like Dance, Speech and Drama, Art and Design, as well as Music now became part of the curriculum at George Secondary and in April 2007 these different studios were launched with displays and performances by the learners. As the only such focus school in the widespread South Cape/Karoo EMDC, learners from all over the EMDC attend the school.
From the Khanya and Focus School project the school has realised the need to empower the learners, as well as the broader community. Learners and members of the community attend computer skills training classes, as well as Design, Drama and Dance classes that are offered by the dedicated educators after hours.
