Percy Mdala High School

Overlooking the picturesque Knysna Lagoon Percy Mdala High and its attitude towards technology completely lives up to the goals and objectives of the Khanya Project.

Initially part of the Telkom Thintana Project, Percy Mdala High quickly outgrew their existing technology and started searching for alternative solutions that would simultaneously address their needs and improve the performance of their learners. In 2003 they received 10 computers from Khanya to add to their excisting 10 “old” computers that they had received from a local company. The initial objective was to provide a suitable platform for their mathematics curriculum software. Very soon, however, Khanya Management witnessed the eagerness with which this school approached technology and the idea of an additional laboratory was conceived.

The school now has two fully furnished laboratories, one Science lab and one Electronic Whiteboard. These are used daily by both the educators and the learners. An open period in either of the laboratories is hard to find. With the assistance of a Khanya Curriculum Facilitator educators and learners have become familiar with the software. Learners who were initially intimidated by Mathematics now enjoy their mathematics activities. One of the biggest challenges that the staff now faces is persuading learners that it is time to go home in the afternoon. Cultivating a love for learning is only one of the by-products of using technology in education that has occurred at Percy Mdala.

With the assistance of a retired IT specialist form the UK, a Computer Club has been established at the school where the learners rebuilt and fix “old” computers. Five of these refurbished computers have already been given to a neighboring primary school. The school is also involved in a partnership with St. Dominics in the UK. The two school share a webpage and it can be visited at www.bbc.co.uk/nisa .

Considering the significance that educators place on motivation as a component of successful learning, the educators of Percy Mdala High remain convinced that education through technology will yield results that have yet to be uncovered.
