Knysna High
Knysna High lies in the very heart of the beautiful town of Knysna on the Garden Route. The school serves a diverse community that reflects the many cultures of our country and learners are drawn from both affluent and very poor homes.
With a view to providing their learners with essential skills in technology, Knysna High had established their own computer laboratory with 34 computers. The introduction of F.E.T in 2006 meant that this facility was totally booked for CAT lessons and other learning areas did not have access to the technology for curriculum delivery at all.
The Khanya Project has introduced some new, alternative forms of technology at Knysna High. Two Interactive Electronic Whiteboards have been installed as well as two data projectors and supporting notebooks and the Khanya Project assisted the school in upgrading their existing network.
For the first time, all learning areas have access to technology and educators are finding that their learners are more interested in lessons as a result of the multiple media used for presentation. Lessons are therefore more effective and educators have access to information from all over the world that they can integrate seamlessly into their lessons.
Learners at Knysna High respond very favorably to the technology now available in the classroom. The software used by their educators helps them to visualize and understand difficult concepts more readily.
The work of the Khanya Project at Knysna High has created an awareness of what can be achieved in the classroom when integrating technology into the curriculum delivery process. This heightened awareness has led to the school connecting most classrooms to the school network and to the Internet. At the beginning of 2010 the school bought more laptops and data projectors that will be used for the specialized subjects like Mathematics, Science and Languages. It is, however, the vision of the school community to have ICT equipment in all their classrooms within the next few months.
