Sedgefield Primary
While Sedgefield Primary, situated in Smutsville, had been identified to be the recipient of a Khanya laboratory for curriculum delivery through technology in 2005, it was only a year later that this promise was finally fulfilled. While the hardware and software had been delivered in 2005, the infrastructure for the potential venue did not meet the required standards and the school was in the process of being moved as a result of structural decay.
While the new school building is being built, Sedgefield Primary – and its computer laboratory – is being housed in temporary buildings. Their laboratory was inaugurated in these facilities in July 2006 and the staff is eagerly attending its training sessions with their Khanya facilitator.
Educators are already using the laboratory for the preparation of classroom activities and exam papers and learners visit the laboratory regularly. Both educators and learners are enthusiastic about the opportunities that are now available to them as a result of their laboratory and all are very keen to learn to use the facilities optimally.
While the school hopes in the future to be able to make the computer laboratory available to the public for computer literacy lessons, they are experiencing practical problems because of the sandy environment – a habitual offender against technology – and the poor provision of electricity which have already resulted in software having to be reinstalled.
However, Sedgefield Primary remain optimistic and determined in their desire to provide quality, up to date education for their learners.
