Isalathiso Prim
As a result of the almost exponential growth of the KwaNonqaba housing project near Mossel Bay, Isalathiso Primary School was founded in 1994 to relieve the pressure of overcrowded classrooms in the existing schools. PetroSA, which draws its workforce from this area, donated a fully equipped computer laboratory with more than 25 computers to the school.
In August 2003 Isalathiso joined the Khanya Project, who assisted them in selecting and obtaining curriculum software. The educators underwent training in basic computer literacy and the effective use of the curriculum software. With their training complete, Isalathiso Primary’s educators have experienced an easing of their administrative burden and they feel confident in the use of the technology in the preparation of their lessons and in their delivery of the curriculum to their learners. Educators have watched excitedly as learners assimilate the knowledge of computerised exercises and as they develop the skills required to flourish in this interactive electronic environment.
Learners at Isalathiso Primary have clearly risen to the challenge of technology. They thrive in the laboratory where they can experience instant success and they can develop at their own rate. In this visually stimulating environment, learners grasp concepts far more easily as they can see it as it is explained and they can often manipulate it and interact with it.
Since the introduction of Information and Communications Technology at the school, the learners and the educators have newfound motivation and they spend every available moment in the computer laboratory.
In the true spirit of empowerment, Isalathiso's future plans include making the computer laboratory available to the larger community after regular school hours.
