|Community Story|Event - Thrilling Use of Technology at Punt High
Punt High
Punt High School is situated in the beautiful seaside town of Mossel Bay. It is said to be the school with the most spectacular view as it overlooks the sea and it has the mountains in the background. The school accommodates learners from grade 8 to grade 12 and it has a proud record of excellent academic results while also giving a good account of itself in various sport activities.
Punt High established a computer laboratory some twelve years ago and since then many learners have benefited from the availability of modern technology. Computer Science and Compu-typing are the two subjects that were subsequently introduced and Punt High are extremely proud of the achievement of the learners in these two subjects.
The demand for the use of the laboratory soon began to exceed its capacity and Punt High was very pleased to become part of the Khanya Project in 2005. The Khanya computer laboratory and Khanya’s involvement at the school started a technical revolution at Punt High. They realised the value of educational software in teaching and a third laboratory was built. All three computer laboratories are used for Computer Applied Technology, Computer Literacy for Grade 8 and Grade 9, Civil Engineering Technology and for Mathematics. With their enthusiasm and commitment it is hardly surprising that Punt High became technically independent in 2007.
Khanya also became involved with the Science Department and Punt High now has science laboratories that are equipped with data projectors, notebooks, internet access, Mindset dvd’s, an electronic whiteboard and software for virtual science laboratories. All lessons are available for learners on the internet and learners have the opportunity to contact educators after hours via e-mail.
Learners have really responded well to these visually stimulating lessons. This has had a positive effect on class discipline and concepts that were previously difficult to understand are now easier to grasp with the aid of java simulations and video material presented by Mindset.
Science educators are also very excited about all the benefits of the new technology. Teaching is much more fun and administrative work much less of a hassle. It is easy to share lesson material with other schools and the Science Department at Punt High has a very healthy relationship with their neighbouring schools. They are frequently invited to present workshops on the use of technology in science teaching to the Dinaledi Schools in the district.
More and more educators are implementing technology in their teaching. The Mathematics Department attend workshops presented by Khanya and are very excited about the use of mathematical software in mathematics classes.
The influence of Khanya can be seen throughout the school as the governing body broadens its plans to include equipping more educators with data projectors and notebooks. Technology is no longer the sole domain of the computer laboratories or the science laboratories – Punt High aims to give all learners the opportunity to interact with educational software in as many learning areas as possible.
