Hillcrest Secondary
Hillcrest Secondary was one of the very first schools in Mossel Bay to purchase their own computers in 2001 so they could offer computer literacy classes to their learners and to the broader community, thus living up to their motto, “Simper Prima” (Always First). Unfortunately, these classes had to be discontinued and it was not until 2003 when they became a partner school in the Khanya Project that true curriculum delivery through technology could become a reality at Hillcrest Secondary.
The news of their inclusion in the project filled the educators with keen anticipation as they contemplated the opportunities that would be made available to their learners when they were exposed to education through technology. Educators lost no time in skilling themselves and they have all completed the computer literacy course offered by Khanya and they can make good use of the technology to assist them in their daily administrative work. Most of them are also now confident enough to bring their large classes to the laboratory and to engage their learners with the technology for curriculum delivery.
Learners respond enthusiastically to this interactive environment and, spurred on by their educators’ confidence, they are enjoying working on the computers. Educators believe that the laboratory has resulted in a marked improvement in the learners’ approach and attitude towards their work.
The laboratory at Hillcrest Secondary is optimally used with learners being taken there for instruction in learning areas such as mathematics, life orientation and languages. As a result, the school is currently unable to offer CAT as a learning area. This, together with the size of the learner body and the growing popularity of the technology with both learners and educators, has resulted in a need to establish a second laboratory. Towards this end, Hillcrest Secondary works very closely with private companies in fund raising ventures and, as part of this initiative, they offer computer literacy classes to the employees at a number of private companies.
While monies are still being raised for their second laboratory, some of the pressure was alleviated when they received an Interactive Electronic White board from Khanya in 2005. This is used to great effect for curriculum delivery.
Hillcrest Secondary remains committed in their goal to change the lives of the broader community by empowering and engaging them in the world of ICT.
