Albertinia High

Albertinia High School, which celebrated its centenary in 1999, became part of the Khanya Project in the first semester of 2005 as part of the WCED drive to ensure that all high schools in the Province were F.E.T compliant. This school has grown from a small village school to the present day combined school (grade 1 – 12) of over four hundred learners that are drawn from the entire community.

Albertinia High really wants their learners to be prepared for life after school and they believe that the economics of this country require a greater understanding of ICT. This, together with the changing curriculum, necessitates that learners are computer literate. They were therefore overjoyed to be included in the Khanya Project as their existing computer laboratory with 486 PC’s was outdated. Khanya, which provided a whiteboard for the laboratory, new lights, an ISDN line, new hard and software and training, could not have come at a better time for Albertinia High.

Initially, educators felt totally at sea – computer skills were few and far between. However, once training with their Khanya facilitator commenced, fears and uncertainties subsided. Training was done in such a way that all educators have been empowered to use the teaching materials and communication opportunities that the laboratory offers. Educators incorporate the latest technology in their lessons and all learning areas are benefiting from this, especially mathematics and the languages. A stronger connection has been forged between what is taught in the classroom and the ‘outside world’ than ever before.

Although the community of Albertinia and the school itself struggle financially, the Khanya laboratory at the school and the way educators and learners have been empowered to use the technology puts the educators and learners at this school on an equal footing with learners at more advantaged schools. And, it just keeps getting better – Albertinia High have recently installed an interactive electronic whiteboard, data projectors and mindset points in some of the classrooms!

Learners at Albertinia High are overjoyed with their laboratory. Their direct interaction with the work often results in a better grasp of concepts and learners at all level of ability feel more stimulated as they can progress at their individual pace. Time in the laboratory is a precious commodity keenly anticipated by all and brave is the educator who will dare to miss a lesson predetermined in the laboratory.

The growth in learner and educator confidence with technology has resulted in the creation of a school newspaper that is put together using desk top publishing software in the laboratory. Learners also have access to the laboratory after school hours to practice their skills and to research assignments and projects.

Khanya’s involvement at Albertinia High has heralded the arrival of a new era in teaching that excites and challenges educators and learners alike. As skills are developed and confidence continues to grow, Albertinia High looks towards sharing their good fortune and skill with the broader community by opening their computer laboratory to the community for computer literacy lessons.
