Melkhoutfontein Primary

Situated on the national road close to the picturesque coastal town of Stilbaai stands Melkhoutfontein Primary, a school which caters for learners from grade R to grade 9. The school first started operating in 1886 from the Anglican stone church; the first school building was built in 1938 and it has been expanded as the enrolment increased.

While the school only had three computers which were used primarily for administrative purposes and by the staff, they were very much aware of the growing importance of technology. The staff at Melkhoutfontein recognises the vital role of computer literacy both in education and the future career prospects of their learners and they believe that their Khanya computer laboratory is of incalculable value to the learners and the greater community in reaching their full potential.

The school was immensely pleased when they were chosen to be part of the Khanya Project and when they realised that they were to receive a fully equipped computer laboratory. They believe that it will open many doors for the entire community and, even though the computer facility will be a ‘first’ for everyone, their interest and enthusiasm for the project far outweighed any concerns they may have had.

They rapidly set about ensuring that the infrastructure for the laboratory was completed in record time and up to the high standards of the Khanya team. With their hard and software installed, Melkhoutfontein Primary were ready to open the doors of their new laboratory to their excited learners, educators and support staff. This environment was totally new as most learners and educators had never engaged with technology previously – some even held up the mouse as if it were to be operated in the air! With a couple of training sessions – for the educators – and lessons – for the learners – under their belts, confidence and skill is quickly developing at Melkhoutfontein Primary

The school is positive that their computer laboratory will not only be of great benefit to them, but will uplift the entire community, ensuring that everyone willing to learn is afforded the opportunity to develop their skills. With their positive attitude towards technology, Melkhoutfontein Primary hope someday to produce their own ‘Mark Shuttleworth’, thanks to the foundation they have received in their Khanya computer laboratory.
