KHANYA SCHOOLS

Algerynskraal Primary

Approximately twenty kilometres from Ladismith lies the tiny rural school, Algerynskraal Primary. Established initially in 1958 this farm school has served the children of farm workers who work on the surrounding farms for the past fifty years. A massive migration of the rural population to cities in search of work in the 1990’s had a dramatic impact on learner numbers at this school as well as on neighbouring farm schools. With the result that Adamskraal Primary and Plathuis Primary amalgamated with Algerynskraal Primary in 2000.

Today, Algerynskraal Primary boasts with 3 classrooms and modern amenities. With electricity and an internet connection, the remote rural school is able to stay in contact with the educational authorities. Their inclusion in the Khanya Project in late 2008 means that they will soon be in a position to modernise education at the school even further with the introduction of technology into the curriculum delivery process.

This new development is one that Algerynskraal Primary had not even considered because of their severe financial limitations. Now, thanks to the Khanya Project, their dream of bringing their learners into the 21st century by developing in the skills that will enable them to participate in society in a meaningful way, will be realised. Not only will they develop vital computer literacy skills, they will also use the technology to improve literacy and numeracy levels among the learners.

Algerynskraal Primary eagerly anticipates the developments that their partnership with the Khanya Project will enable. The educators are excited at the prospect of the technology and keenly anticipate their training that will empower them to use the technology for their administrative work, for their planning and preparation of lessons and for the delivery of the curriculum to their learners in a new and exciting way.

Although there is still a long road ahead until the provision of the relevant infrastructure and training can take place, the wheels have started turning and a sense of excitement can be observed amongst the various role players. Considering the empowering experiences that other Khanya partner schools enjoy, Algerynskraal Primary stands to reap the rewards of patience as they stand on the threshold of the world of information accessed through Information and Communications Technology.
