Aurial College
Bridgton Junior Secondary is housed in the previous Southern Cape Teacher's Training College. The school is relatively young and offers education for grades eight and nine. Bridgton offers various sports codes and is involved in cultural activities.
In fact, its participation in the locally-hosted national cultural festival ensures that the school is able to supplement its fundraising drives. This type of initiative characterizes schools that take responsibility for their progress and accelerate and sustain the Khanya programme at their schools. When Bridgton Junior heard of their inclusion in the Khanya Project, they installed the electrical trunking to the server room once the electrical upgrade in the room designated as the Computer Laboratory was completed.
Khanya has made it possible for the school to provide all learners with the opportunity to become computer literate. It also provides access to technology to hundreds of learners who do not have computers at home, thus narrowing the digital divide in this community.
Educators welcomed their training with their Khanya facilitator and entered into it with enthusiasm. They all feel that they have benefited enormously from their lessons in Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet and Email and that their work is now more structured and more professional. Their laboratory is now an effective resource, readily available to them and they are able to do their lesson preparation effectively and efficiently. The software also helps them to deliver the curriculum more effectively in problem areas, allowing learners to progress as they master a particular skill without either racing ahead of struggling learners or slowing down those who are quick to grasp difficult concepts. It has also become an invaluable resource for the learners’ research projects.
Thanks to the Khanya Project learners at Bridgton Junior Secondary can keep up with the fast changing world of technology and the whole school community is over the moon with Khanya's presence at the school. A new way of learning is rubbing off on the learners as they engage with the software for curriculum purposes. Education through technology surely is a reality at Bridgton Junior Secondary.
