KHANYA SCHOOLS

Bongulethu Primary

Situated in the South Cape/Karoo town of Oudtshoorn, Bongulethu Primary operates through a service centre. The school serves the poorest of a rural community that is characterised by high levels of unemployment.

Bongulethu Primary realised that the lack of access to technology, while all around them other learners were being skilled in its use and it was playing an increasingly important role in society and in the employment market, was detrimental to their learners. However, they were without any funds to redress this situation. The school possessed only one computer – for administration – and two classes would have to be converted to house any kind of laboratory. It seemed simply beyond their reach.

Their inclusion in the Khanya Project in 2005 has made this seemingly impossible dream a reality and Bongulethu Primary is very proud of their laboratory. Educators, who may have been slightly anxious about entering this new world of technology, have responded very enthusiastically to their training with the Khanya facilitator where they have learnt basic computer literacy as well as the use of technology for integrated curriculum delivery.

Each session in the laboratory builds confidence and any initial hesitation about coping in this environment with a class of excited children has been dispelled and educators are quietly confident. With Internet access educators at Bongulethu Primary plan to link up with other schools and pool resources and ideas.

Excitement is not restricted to the educators; learners too are desperately keen to visit the laboratory. Use of the laboratory by the learners has been phased in, starting with the foundation phase – who are quite the envy of the rest of the school. All learners will visit the laboratory regularly according to a predetermined timetable. Learners are keen to develop their skills with the educational software and are finding lessons highly stimulating and challenging.

Bongulethu Primary had an uncertain entry into the world of technology. With their foot in the door, they are determined to develop the skills to run with this fantastically empowering educational tool so their learners too can feel confident when they enter the fast paced society that awaits them.
