KHANYA SCHOOLS

Van Reede Primary

After a slow start with eight computers in 1998, Van Reede Primary is now the proud owner of a Computer Laboratory with more than forty computers bought with the school’s own funds.

The Khanya Project facilitates curriculum delivery using Information and Communications Technology at Van Reede Primary. The school’s programme includes support for Mathematics and Literacy using technology on a weekly basis. The facilitation of computer literacy skills is integrated with curriculum delivery using technology. In addition, the ELSEN educator uses her class, which has ten computers, to address the barriers to learning encountered by individual learners. Learners who specifically wish to improve their basic computer literacy skills are able to attend sessions specifically geared to this that the school offers as part of its extramural programme.

Van Reede Primary has also extended their network to classrooms so that learners can benefit from direct links to the Internet during integrated class activities. Televisions have been installed to allow class participation for programs such as Cami Maths. These improvements allow multiple classes to access information at the same time.

The school is fortunate to have computer co-ordinator, Hendrien Coetzee, a finalist in the Intel Innovative Teacher competition and someone who is passionate about integrating technology not only in the curriculum but in the lives of the learners. She and the grade 5 and 6 learners are currently designing educational games for community pre-schools, creating them and visiting the schools to introduce the games to the 5 year olds. Many communities in Oudtshoorn are poor and the pre-schools cannot afford the cost of educational games. Coetzee’s idea was to make the games and send them to the pre-schools, but the activity grew in educational value when her learners visited the schools and introduced the games themselves.

“My learners are learning valuable skills,” explained Coetzee. “They are not only learning to integrate language, mathematics and technology skills, but they are also thinking about presentation, explanations and implementation of the playing skills. In doing so they have to imagine that they are 5-year-olds. The actual visit is the most challenging, yet most exciting part of the while project.”

Van Reede Primary’s inclusion in the Telkom 2010 Project came as a pleasant surprise and they have taken delivery of the three Electronic Interactive Whiteboards, their laptops and data projectors with great excitement. Such has been the enthusiasm for this new initiative that training had to begin immediately. Many of the educators are already comfortable and competent users and they enthusiastically develop new lessons on the EIWB. Educator enthusiasm is only equalled by that of the learners who are responding extremely well to the new technology.

With passion, foresight and vision, Van Reede Primary are making technology work for them while also using it to enrich the lives of the broader community.
