Wesbank Primary
Wesbank Primary in Oudtshoorn has two computer laboratories with forty computers in each. The school established both computer laboratories themselves, and a donation by the Khanya Project has enabled them to expand the use of the computer laboratories for curriculum delivery in many of the Learning Areas of all classes.
The school library has been converted into a research centre and twelve classrooms each have individual computers linked to a big screen television. This arrangement facilitates innovative approaches to teaching and learning. The learners benefit from daily access to the Internet for research, which they routinely present to their peers using PowerPoint demonstrations.
Wesbank strives to exploit the available technology in all spheres. In their pursuit of excellence this school transcends their vision and stands as a model for education through technology that can be emulated with confidence. The school was awarded second prize in the South African Most Improved Schools Awards of 2003, for the category: Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching.
There is now also an interesting creativity centre, which is intended to improve the learners’ designing skills and to encourage creativity. Here, an interactive white board has been set up that is also used to contribute to creative thinking in design and is used in interactive lessons and presentations. Several computer programmes are used for this purpose.
Wesbank Primary has a dynamic approach to the application of technology in the classroom and the lives of their learners, regularly exploring and finding new ways of using the technology to enhance the learning experience.
