Protea Laer
The oldest school in Bridgton, Oudtshoorn, Protea Primary is housed in the building of what was formerly the South Cape Training College. The school has a chequered history of being amalgamated with other schools and it has been badly affected by the growth of new areas around it which have drawn all the young families, leaving the area immediately surrounding Protea Primary as almost a home for the elderly. With limited new blood coming into the area and socio-economic problems associated with high unemployment prevalent, many parents were reluctant to send their children to the school.
Protea Primary fought a long, hard battle to become part of the Khanya Project as they believe that it will galvanize their previously unmotivated learners, making them eager to learn and to achieve. The presence of a working computer laboratory also acts as a draw card to attract new learners and new parents to the school. Learners are very positive about their lessons in the laboratory and, in addition to not being willing to miss a single session in this facility, they can often be found here in the afternoons after school. Work done in the laboratory is reinforcing lessons learnt in the classroom and learners’ results already bear testimony to the benefit of the technology. Difficulties in mathematics and in reading skills are being addressed with the aid of technology and learners show a willingness to be involved and participate in lessons not experienced in the regular classroom. Heightened learner co-operation and a disciplined approach to work ensure that every lesson in the laboratory is time well spent.
Educators have been trained intensively by their Khanya facilitator. Training has been entered into with a positive attitude and it has resulted in even the educators with the least experience of technology feeling empowered as they are now able to complete all administrative tasks electronically. They also use the technology to prepare and present lessons and they find it far easier to assess their learners in this interactive environment and are thus able to identify learners who struggle to master important concepts. Educators now have access to a wealth of resources that are informing and directing their lessons, ensuring that lessons are thoroughly up-to-date and relevant.
As computers are such an integral part of life in the twenty-first century, Protea Primary believes that the Khanya Project has opened a whole new world to them and it provides them with the tools to better equip their learners to take up their place in this 21st century world.
