Mooiuitsig Primary No. 2

Mooiuitsig Primary is a tiny multigrade primary school situated on the road between Oudshoorn and Mosselbay. The parent community is an impoverished one that manages to eke out a living working on the surrounding farms and education represents an opportunity for their children to improve their choices in life.

Opened in 2004, Mooiuitsig Primary initially only catered for learners from grade 1 to grade 3 and comprised of a scant 20 learners. Today learner numbers have increased and the school has grown to accommodate learners up to and including grade 6.

Poverty affects every aspect of the learners at Mooiuitsig Primary’s lives. They do not have the opportunity for exposure to technology or the opportunity or resources to develop any form of computer literacy. The school had managed to acquire one old and failing computer for administrative purposes and learners were so enchanted by this strange machine that many could be seen building computers out of boxes and stones during breaks.

The Khanya Project has introduced technology into the educational process at Mooiuitsig Primary with the installation of an Interactive Electronic Whiteboard, a laptop and a data projector. Their inclusion in the Project has been met with ecstatic enthusiasm. Educators are convinced that this technology will be of great value in the multigrade class where the educator can use it to prepare, plan and save lessons directed at different age and ability levels to be presented while she teaches other lessons. Training has in the use of this technology has helped educators to generate ideas and to involve learners more in the learning process.

Learners are awed by visual presentations when their teacher uses photographic and video presentations of themes and concepts in the classroom. They are experiencing a new world and they are more actively involved in their own learning. Learners have access to information via the internet and they would like every lesson to be one in which the EIWB is used.

Mooiuitsig Primary is committed to using the technology to capture the interest of their learners and to inspire them to become life long learners.
