De Rust Secondary

De Rust High School is a small school situated in the Town of De Rust, at the foot of the Majestic Swarteberg Mountains and at the entrance to the picturesque Meiringspoort. The school is still very young and only opened its doors at the beginning of January 2004. The beautiful and authentic buildings of the previous De Rust Primary in the centre of town was developed and upgraded for use by the High School.

Khanya first became involved at De Rust High at the beginning of 2005 as part of the WCED’s initiative to ensure that all high schools had ICT for curriculum delivery. This happily coincided with the upgrading of the school buildings. The development of the infrastructure for the laboratory was therefore made part of this project. At the beginning of 2006 Khanya supplied and installed all the computer equipment and software needed.

Learners as well as teachers in Languages and Mathematics have been trained in the use of Master Maths and Cami, and are all participating enthusiastically. The vast majority of the learners are totally without any computer skills, and the teachers are therefore faced with the daunting task of balancing the teaching of basic Computer Literacy with the use of the educational programs.

All pupils have access to the laboratory and are participating eagerly. Although access to the laboratory is restricted as they only have 29 Computers (25 supplied by Khanya and 4 by the school), it is a marvel to see how some of them master the required skills so rapidly.

At the end of each school day the Grade 11 and 12 students also have the opportunity to hone their skills in Mathematics. The school is planning to implement a programme where learners can develop their computer skills so that they can complete some of their CASS projects and tasks after school using the Computer laboratory.

De Rust High are confident that with all the school has going for it, together with their Khanya laboratory and the facilitation provided by Khanya, things are looking rosy for all learners who will venture into the laboratory.
