KHANYA SCHOOLS

Grootkraal UCC Primary

Grootkraal Primary is a mere stone’s throw from the world renowned Cango Caves in the Eden District. It serves a fairly widespread rural area as learners are drawn from farms in the Bergoord, De Hoek, Rust en Vrede and Waterval areas.

Grootkraal Primary has served this community for over eighty years. During this time it has shown both physical growth as well as growth in the quality of learner produced. Until about twelve years ago, some learners had to walk over 24 kilometres to get to school – they have now raised enough funds to purchase two school buses; learners had to fetch drinking water from the nearby Grobbelaars River, there was no electricity, no telephone and there were no flushing toilets. All this has been reformed as the school has inched its way into the 21st century, encouraging their learners in their efforts to develop the skills that will allow them to become functioning members of a modern society.

Part of their development plans for the school includes the introduction of some form of technology. While the school has managed to achieve a great deal through fundraising and donations, technology has, until now, been out of their reach. Through the work done by the Khanya Project, technology will now be installed that will ensure that educators and learners have regular, meaningful interaction with technology.

Technology will bring the world into the classroom and into the lives of these learners who have led a fairly remote existence. They will have access to untold resources that will inform and shape their lessons as well as the research assignments that they will now be able to conduct more effectively.

Educators are very excited about the developments planned for their school. They are confident that the quality of the lessons they can present with the aid of technology, as well as the value it will add to their administrative work, will be beneficial to all at the school.

Technology may be reaching this little school fairly late. Watch out world, though, Grootkraal Primary intends making it count!
