Hotomskloof Primary
Hotomskloof Primary is a small farm school situated on the Saag Jonker Group farm approximately eighteen kilometres from Oudtshoorn. 90% of the parent community are farm workers who work either in the ostrich farming industry, cattle farming industry or in the Lucerne packing industry. While an impoverished community, it is also one in which its members constantly try to improve themselves and develop new skills by attending ABET classes that are held at the school.
Hotomskloof Primary is well aware of the growing importance of technology in society and it was with the idea of skilling their learners to cope with this that they began introducing limited technology at the school. In addition, the computers would provide their learners who are physically isolated from other communities, the country and the world, with invaluable resources.
While a clear indication of their commitment and their belief in taking small steps towards great achievements, the limited technology that Hotomskloof Primary had managed to install was of very little benefit to the learners. Only a few computers had been acquired and these were aging and not suitable for use for curriculum delivery. While educators did garner some benefit in their administrative work and in preparation of tasks for learners, a great deal of the experience with technology had resulted in frustration.
Their inclusion in the Khanya Project in 2008 has breathed new life, new hope and great expectations into the dream of technology integrated education at Hotomskloof Primary. With the technology that the Khanya Project will provide, learners will be able to develop computer skills that will enable them to cope with the later demands of high school and the future job market. Initial focus will be on improving literacy levels and numerical skills and learners keenly anticipate being able to learn using this exciting educational tool.
Educators too envisage a total shift in the way they approach their lessons. Preparation will be facilitated with the resources and software that will be at their disposal and their administrative tasks will be eased through use of technology.
The first order of business at Hotomskloof Primary is the building of a room to house the future laboratory. They are, however, cautiously optimistic that with the aid of sponsors, this will be achieved within the given time frame and they too will soon be experiencing the wonders of technology integrated curriculum delivery.
