Sacred Heart RK Primary

Sacred Heart Primary in Oudtshoorn was established in 1923 by the Catholic Church who saw the need for proper education for all learners, irrespective of their race. The school started off quite modestly in a makeshift reed and clay structure. Over the years the school has educated, disciplined, given direction and love, formed and nurtured thousands of young children. The many teachers, doctors, lawyers, bricklayers, carpenters, and a host of other professionals who proudly serve the country today, have come through the ranks of Sacred Heart and are a true testimony to the commitment and dedication of the educators at this school over the years.

As with many other educational institutions, Sacred Heart is challenged by technology. Learners need to be equipped with the necessary computer skills at primary school level to enable them to compete at any senior secondary school. For years Sacred Heart had dreamt of having their own computer laboratory, but without the necessary funds, this remained just a dream.

Sacred Heart Primary had seen the work done by the Khanya Project in other schools in their town and, having heard that these schools had used their own funds to prepare the facility to house the computers, they set about raising money through functions for this purpose ever hopeful that they would be included. Through these fundraising drives and the sponsorship of some private concerns they managed to raise the money for the infrastructure of their laboratory and a full Khanya laboratory has been established at the school.

Educators are very enthusiastic about the computer laboratory that will enable their learners to develop computer skills and to compete with learners from other schools. Initial fears and scepticism about the technology were quickly dispelled in training sessions with the Khanya facilitator and educators are able to do their daily planning, assessments and schedules using this medium. With the school committed to this technological path, educators are rising to the challenge of becoming part of the technology age. They are excited about the new dimension technology has brought to their classrooms and are delighted to see their learners learning almost unconsciously as they ‘play’ with the computers and the software.

Learners too have risen to the challenge of technology and enjoy their sessions in the laboratory tremendously. Educators have noted a growing self-confidence among their learners as they interact with the technology as well as an overall improvement in self-discipline as learners take responsibility for their own learning and progress at a rate dictated by their individual ability. The only complaint heard regularly from the learners is that they do not get sufficient time in the laboratory!

Sacred Heart Primary in partnership with the Khanya Project is now able to realise their dream of preparing their learners academically and equipping them with the necessary computer skills. The parent community, the learners and the educators are conscious of the power of the technology they now have access to, the doors that it can open for them, and they are all committed to ensuring its maintenance and its sustainability into the future.
