KHANYA SCHOOLS

Rodewal UCC Primary

Rodewal UCC Primary is a multigrade rural school in Schoemanshoek, approximately twenty kilometres outside Oudtshoorn. Built on church property some fifty years ago, Rodewal UCC Primary serves the children of farm workers in the area, many of whom are seasonal workers and unemployment is thus fairly rife. Poverty and the host of socio-economic problems that usually accompany it are clearly in evidence in this community and learners are fortunate to be a part of the National Schools’ Feeding Scheme that provides learners with a meal every school day.

It is in impoverished communities such as this that Khanya can play a huge role in the upliftment of learners and the community as a whole. The acquisition of skills in technology will empower learners to adjust to the demands of high school far more easily and the skills will ensure that they are able to perform more skilled work on leaving school. Through computer literacy classes, the community too will have the opportunity to develop.

Khanya became involved at Rodewal UCC Primary at the start of 2009. Enthusiasm for technology already exists – the principal has managed to acquire five computers from private concerns for the use of grade 7 learners. In this way the school has managed better to prepare them for high school. Clearly, however, this is not sufficient to ensure effective and efficient curriculum delivery through the integrated use of technology. The provision of two Interactive Electronic Whiteboards and data projectors will ensure the realisation of the school’s dream of exposing their learners to technology.

Educators and learners alike are very excited at the proposed developments. They realise the potential benefits of having access to this technology and keenly anticipate teaching and learning in a technology enriched environment.
