KHANYA SCHOOLS

Iingcinga Zethu Secondary

Iingcinga zethu Secondary is situated in Nduli just outside Ceres. The school serves a very poor Xhosa speaking community and, prior to Khanya’s involvement at the school, they had no technology with which the learners could interact. With only two computers at the school, and these restricted purely for administrative purposes, the implementation of the Further Education and Training curriculum was a source of concern for many at the school as they could not deliver a curriculum which demanded the use of technology in most of the learning areas.

Their inclusion in the Khanya Project was therefore a great relief. However, over this initial hurdle, Iingcinga zethu then had to face an even greater and more practical one – they had no physical space for a laboratory. They had to explore possibilities for alternative solutions and decided to extend the administration block to build on a computer laboratory.

Iingcinga zethu is very excited about their computer laboratory. Their lack of experience with any form of technology led to concern that they would not be able to manage it independently. However, with the reassurance and support of the Khanya team and the necessary training for LAN administration and curriculum delivery, these uncertainties have been dispelled and Iingcinga zethu, like so many other Khanya schools, has adapted to the technology and they do not remember how they managed prior to its introduction.

Educators have completed training in basic computer literacy and are using the technology extensively for the completion of administrative work. Administrative work like filing, recording and analysis of results has been eased and takes far less time than previously, freeing educators up to use technology to develop lessons and research information that continues to shape their lessons. Teaching has thus become more relevant and they find that their learners are able to grasp concepts more readily in this interactive environment.

Learners attend lessons in the laboratory with enthusiasm and commitment. They are able to access the internet to research projects and assignments, they use Encarta and are able to put together PowerPoint presentations. In addition to these skills, the educational software that focuses on mathematics is being used to improve results in this learning area.

Learners at Iingcinga zethu Secondary finally feel that they have gained access to the 21st century through the introduction at their school of technology. They are now able to develop skills that will enable them to compete more successfully for future employment and more opportunities are being opened to them as a result.
