De Kruine Secondary
In the small Karoo town of Touwsrivier you will find De Kruine Secondary. It serves a very small community which experiences high unemployment causing the town slowly to die. As a result of this, many learners are not motivated about education and tend to not attend school. De Kruine Secondary is determined to combat this. A few years ago they received a merit award and this enabled them to establish their own computer laboratory which they believed would act as a draw card to potential learners.
Since the inception of their own computer laboratory, it has been a concern of management to ensure educators and learners become computer literate. While a large portion of the school community uses the computers in one way or another, the majority of the time is spent using material downloaded from the Internet. PowerPoint presentations are also used in Geography and Biology classes which allow learners to visualize and perceive abstract knowledge but lack of advanced technology does have its limitations.
Through their partnership with Khanya which came about in 2004 as part of the drive to ensure that all high schools were F.E.T compliant, De Kruine Secondary hopes to overcome these obstacles and implement a co-ordinated programme for teaching mathematics using computer technology. The existing laboratory could not support the mathematics focus and, initially Khanya was going to upgrade their existing laboratory by adding additional computers, a server and a new network. However, the old computers could not run on the new network and have therefore been taken out of the network and deployed elsewhere in the school.
The effective creation of self-paced learning will greatly benefit Outcomes Based education and hopefully see learners developing a passion for subjects offered in the Further Education and Training band. Enhancing teaching and learning methodologies by employing technology will hopefully lead to an increase in learner pass rates, particularly in mathematics.
Although De Kruine Secondary is not new to technology and are aware of the benefits and possibilities of technology, they are very excited about the upgrade and the new, curriculum driven software which has been installed. They are confident that they will also encourage more learners in the area to attend school when word gets out about all the exciting things that are happening at their school.
