Meiring Prim

Situated in the picturesque village of Riebeeck Kasteel in the Malmesbury district, Meiring Primary serves a predominantly rural community with learners being drawn from the surrounding farms as well as from Hermon. Established in 1953 the school grew steadily until its expansion in 1978 and continues to serve its impoverished community with pride and dedication, determined to provide its learners with opportunities that will allow them to create better lives for themselves.

Without the funding to establish a laboratory on their own, Meiring Primary has welcomed the opportunity to become part of the Khanya Project. Only having computers for administrative work, learners and educators at the school have eagerly become involved in the project and now keenly attend lessons where they are rapidly developing computer literacy skills and they are able to connect to the internet for research.

Educators and learners at Meiring Primary see the introduction of technology at their school as a challenge; a challenge they are more than equal to. A culture of learning has been established as a result of the new technology and learners will seldom risk missing the opportunity to visit the laboratory through absence or poor behaviour. They eagerly logon and work their way through the lessons prepared for them by their educator.

With some basic skills in place, thanks to their Khanya facilitator, educators at Meiring Primary are able to complete their administrative tasks electronically, prepare their lessons and deliver the curriculum in an environment enhanced by technology. Lessons are more thoroughly up to date as they are informed by resources sourced from the Interenet, they are challenging for their learners and learners’ work is assessed instantly. This eases the load for educators and provides the learners with instant feedback and a growing sense of accomplishment and confidence.

Although Meiring Primary is still fairly new to the world of technology, they are already aware of the momentous change it has wrought in the lives of its educators and learners. Change that will continue to evolve and shape the future of education at this school.
