St. Thomas Primary
When your school is situated in a crime ridden area and the entire school building is a prefabricated structure, how do you tackle the challenge of a secure computer laboratory? St Thomas Primary found the answer: they built an entire brick and mortar room from scratch to house their Khanya computers.
Not deterred by the daunting prospect and costs of building a new structure, they organized a formal gala-evening and invited all local businesses to attend. The event was so well organized and their enthusiasm so contagious that they managed to secure pledges for the completion of the entire room on the very same evening. With the funds in hand the school had the building completed in record time, the furniture and infrastructure were then installed and they were ready for the hardware to be delivered and installed.
As the majority of the learners come from a previously disadvantaged community, St Thomas is the only place where they have the opportunity to interact with technology. The educators who were initially skeptical about how the technology would fit in with their lessons can now hardly wait to try out their new skills on their learners. They have attended their training sessions in MS Office, CAMI and NetOps with the Khanya facilitator and are already experiencing the enriching benefits technology can have. The learners anticipate their weekly lesson in the laboratory with great excitement and have expressed their preference for lessons delivered in this dynamic, interactive environment.
While St Thomas is still settling in to their Khanya computer laboratory they have already got plans in place to share it with the community by offering computer literacy classes in the evenings, so doing they hope to upskill and uplift the community they serve. They believe that members of the community who avail themselves of this opportunity will acquire much needed skills which will open up more employment opportunities to them so they may improve their living conditions.
