Schoonspruit Secondary

Found in the heart of the Swartland region of the Western Cape, Schoonspruit Secondary serves a community with different socio-economic backgrounds, drawing many of the learners from homes with a high level of unemployment.

This situation is not viewed as an obstacle to the community who take great pride in their excellent academic achievements. They attribute their one hundred percent Mathematics Higher Grade pass rate to the intervention and support of the Khanya Project who installed a laboratory and Master Maths software which is used to great effect by the Grade 10 – 12 learners who do mathematics and mathematical literacy.

A more recent addition to the school has been the establishment of a facility that houses an interactive electronic whiteboard that is accessible to all learning areas. Mindset has also been installed – in this facility a television and computer are connected to make the learning experience more relevant and more interesting.

As a TRAC (Transportation and Civil Engineering) school in the Swartland district, Schoonspruit Secondary received a hefty donation of technology and software for use by the Science and Biology departments in a laboratory established by Stellenbosch University. This suite is also made available to senior learners at neighbouring high schools.

Enthusiasm for technology is high and educators and learners have not been disappointed with the results of using technology to deliver the curriculum. The quality of teaching and learning has improved, which has generated a renewed interest from the public in the school.
