Brandenburg Primary

Brandenburg Primary is a rural school surrounded by thirty farms near Porterville. Established in 1982, it has grown steadily and in 1998 the school was extended to include grade seven and the two schools of Brandenburg S S K V Primary and Rooihoogte S S K V Primary were amalgamated.

When Brandenberg Primary initially learnt about their inclusion in the Khanya project through Khanya’s collaboration with MTN in January 2005, the learners and educators’ excitement – and trepidation – knew no bounds. The members of the school community quickly converted a classroom for use as a laboratory and computers donated by MTN were installed. A 74cm television, DSTV decoder and connection and Internet connectivity were also supplied.

Growing learner numbers, however, put increasing pressure on already limited classroom space and, sadly, the laboratory had to once again serve as a classroom. Technology has therefore been put on the back burner as the school tries desperately to build a suitable venue to house a laboratory and upgrade their electricity to support the technology.

Although practical issues have temporarily suspended technology at Brandenburg Primary, enthusiasm for it has not been quelled.
