Laurie Hugo Primary
Laurie Hugo Primary sees the introduction of technology to their school as an opportunity to provide the learners and educators with the guidance that will enable them to become part of the technological era in which they live. It will empower them to participate meaningfully in the global world that they would otherwise be denied.
When Khanya first became involved at the school in February 2006 they had already established a computer facility of their own. The computers had, however, become outdated, many were not working; the eight that did could not support the software required to enable them to use it for curriculum delivery. Over and above the new, fully equipped laboratory that Khanya installed, Laurie Hugo value the training of the educators provided by the project. Not only are they trained in computer literacy; they are also trained in using the technology effectively for curriculum delivery.
Educators may initially have been anxious about all of this ‘new-fangled nonsense’, but with a couple of training sessions under their belts, they soon came to see the value that technology could add to their lives and to the lives of their learners. They have attended training sessions in using the technology to complete their administrative tasks and many have already converted to using it for the setting up of exam papers and the maintenance of mark lists and the calculation of results. They eagerly send e-mails and are avid users of the Internet, trawling it for information that may spark learner interest or bring a particular lesson to life.
Learners are very excited about their new laboratory and a real culture of learning has been created with everyone wanting to use the technology. They want to learn as much about it as possible in order to empower themselves. Learners have been exposed to some interesting programs that will assist them with their numeracy and literacy skills and the variation in the lesson presentation has ensured that learners are more attentive. They also visit the laboratory so they can practise the concepts that have been taught in class – this reinforcement and repetition has had a positive impact on their academic performance.
Laurie Hugo Primary received a number of donations that enabled them to complete the infrastructure for their laboratory. In an effort to pay the community back for their support and commitment, the school hopes to offer evening classes in computer literacy for young school leavers and adults. The computer facility and its internet connection will also be made available to the community for research purposes. Laurie Hugo Primary wishes to make their laboratory as accessible as possible for the community so that everyone can benefit for it and the community will then take ownership of the laboratory and ensure its sustainability into the future.
