Vredendal Secondary

Vredendal Secondary is in the heart of a vibrant business centre, serving families from the surrounding farming and fishing villages as well as the mining industry nearby. Learners are bussed to the school, some of them having a twelve-hour day leaving home at 05:30 in the morning and only returning at 17:30. Vredendal Secondary has managed to maintain an impressive pass rate as well as achieving cultural and sports awards despite the lack of funds.

This school is well positioned to make an enormous success of the Khanya Project as an outstanding feature of the school is that it never waited for handouts. They are currently busy with educator training in ICT and plan to finish it by the end of March 2006.

The Khanya laboratory is used for Mathematics and Computyping while their Telkom laboratory is to train the community in basic skills in Microsoft Office, internet and e-mail. An ex-learner of the school is providing this training. Their Telkom laboratory was upgraded with 20 brand new computers in April 2005 and they plan to install more software for curriculum delivery.
